Jobing Description
Analyst, Performance Management
Flexible location
TNTP strives to end the injustice of educational inequality by providing excellent teachers to the students who need them most and by advancing policies and practices that ensure effective teaching in every classroom. A national nonprofit organization founded by teachers, TNTP is driven by the knowledge that effective teachers have a greater impact on student achievement than any other school factor. In response, TNTP develops customized programs and policy interventions that enable education leaders to find, develop and keep great teachers. Since its inception in 1997, TNTP has recruited or trained approximately 43,000 teachers and worked with more than 200 districts in 31 states - benefiting an estimated 7 million students. Meanwhile, TNTP's acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the teacher workforce -- most recently including The Widget Effect (2009) and Teacher Evaluation 2.0 (2010) -- have influenced federal education policy and inspired reform efforts across the country.
TNTP is active in more than 25 cities, including 10 of the nation's 15 largest.
We are currently seeking one full-time Analyst for the Human Capital Systems department within TNTP's Performance Management group. The Analyst will be TNTP employee based from either our central office in Brooklyn, NY or from a home office anywhere in the U.S. This role is available immediately.
Human Capital Systems
As long as education policies continue to ignore the differences between teachers, districts will never be able to build a thriving teacher workforce capable of closing the achievement gap. TNTP's Performance Management group will work on the ground with states and districts to generate accurate performance data, use this data to inform school-level decisions, and drive district policy and practice. Within TNTP's Performance Management group, the Human Capital Systems department will collaborate with districts and states to ensure that their policies, practices and systems are aligned to teacher effectiveness goals, for example by supporting teacher and principal evaluation design and adoption, training of principal managers, certification of evaluators, tenure/retention policy, and legislative/regulatory reform.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Analyst will draw lessons from the best available data, research, and practical experiences to inform and advance the organization's mission of ensuring all students have access to effective teachers. Through this work, successful candidates have the opportunity to have a profound impact on the direction of major educational reforms. Specific responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
* Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting educational data related to teacher human capital policies and processes and system reform (compensation, district resources, working conditions and retention) and/or educational data related to teacher working conditions
* Merging large data sets to create cross-site and longitudinal data files for organization wide analysis
* Using analytical techniques such as linear and logistic regression to answer research questions
* Generating descriptive statistics, crosstabs, and correlations for data
* Preparing written documents, presentations, and executive summaries for senior district and state level audiences
* Working with colleagues to produce final reports and all other interim updates
* Reading, evaluating, and summarizing academic and policy research relating to public, K-12 education
* Responding to requests for data and information from team members and district and state clients
* Building surveys and analyzing survey data
* Participating in district (or state) interviews and organizing/analyzing the data
* Supporting other staff at TNTP in finding data, creating presentations, identifying models of best practice, and creating publications for public distribution
* Maintaining portions of the team wiki (our web-based data sharing platform) to ensure team members have access to timely and well-organized information on emerging services
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates who are motivated by our mission and who will bring excellent analytic and project management skills to our work. Successful candidates will be independent and focused self-starters. The Analyst must be driven by a vision of reform that positions schools to support student achievement and must be capable of translating that vision into practical steps. In addition we seek individuals who have:
* The ability to integrate and analyze data from multiple, disconnected, and complex data sets. This requires ability to review and clean for data integrity, identify and address inconsistencies in data, develop solutions for dealing with non-linking and missing data, and build and run queries to efficiently clean and analyze information across data sources, including correlation and regression analysis where appropriate
* The ability to design innovative techniques for working with imperfect data sets and translate outputs of self-directed data analysis into easily digestible, insightful, and high-level findings for both policy and practical applications
* Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint (required)
* Proficiency with Access, SPSS, or STATA (required, experience with Access strongly preferred)
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* The ability to work independently in analyzing education data to support policy advocacy, often in time sensitive situations
* Strong follow-through skills and excellent attention to detail, especially under deadline pressure
* The ability to learn quickly and work in a fast paced environment
* Flexibility and comfort with ambiguity
* A willingness to work non-standard hours and/or occasional weekends
