Fuqua’s Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation

Founded in 2005, the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) is an initiative to focus and expand the work on entrepreneurship and innovation at Fuqua. Conducting world-class research and integrating it into our educational program is the hallmark of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Fuqua. The center contributes both to the advancement of knowledge and the practice of entrepreneurship.  We are helping to place Fuqua among a small handful of business schools known for research excellence and research-based education in entrepreneurship and innovation.
The guiding vision of the center, and one which distinguishes it from entrepreneurship initiatives at most universities, consists of two core ideas: a strong, interdisciplinary research foundation, and a multifaceted integration of research, teaching, and practice. This vision is articulated in a set of more concrete objectives that informs the center’s activities in the areas of research, teaching, and practice.
The Director, will be responsible for the management and execution of a Fuqua’s entrepreneurship programs. S/he is regularly required to resolve diverse and advanced problems independently, to manage complex logistics for a variety of stakeholders, and to effectively complete assigned projects. The Director reports to the Executive Director, Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.   The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of project management, a team-oriented attitude, and be a self-starter.  Experience in the area of innovation, entrepreneurship. Familiarity with university program administration is desirable.

10 years professional work experience including 5 years in high-growth startups
  • (55% effort) Manage and nurture all aspects of Fuqua’s existing educational innovation and entrepreneurship programs, including the Concentration in Innovation & Entrepreneurship, summer kick-off and co-curricular activities, in coordination with Duke’s campus-wide Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative.  Create new programs to build our capabilities and capacity. Responsible for the satisfaction of the Fuqua community, including the student community of 500 student innovators and 50 student entrepreneurs, and the alumni community of 2,000+ of alumni innovators and 200+ alumni entrepreneurs. 
    • ?Oversee the flagship entrepreneurship program for Fuqua students, in coordination with Duke I&E’s campus-wide entrepreneurship program.
    • Develop and implement program protocol, procedures, and operating policies to ensure compliance with university policies and procedures; educational and student & alumni affairs best practices.
    • Prepare and create programmatic materials and content
    • Recruit prospective students to increase admitted students interested in entrepreneurship and innovation
    • Create and run the summer intensive kickoff program for 450 MBA students per year.
    • Manage Fuqua’s Concentration in Innovation & Entrepreneurship.
    • Manage up to 100 entrepreneurship student fellows and volunteer alumni mentors
    • Advise students on educational programming opportunities, making sure students have access to the resources needed to make plans for the relevant academic programs of study.  
    • Advise student clubs and organizations, such as the MBA Entrepreneurship Club and the Venture Capital Club.
    • Maintain liaison to outside educational and professional organizations and to main tech hubs in San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Austin, and locally in Raleigh-Durham to source opportunities for students and facilitate alumni engagement.
  • (10% effort) Participate in program assessment; make recommendations and, where appropriate, take actions to improve, expand or create new programming in coordination with Fuqua’s leadership and Duke Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative. 
  • (10% effort) Prepare, edit, distribute, and manage content (print, internet, social media) for marketing and communications activities, in coordination with the Fuqua Communications team.
  • (10% of effort) Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations for educational programs; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.
  • (10% of effort) Supervise and coordinate the work of designated employees, including paid and volunteer student assistants.
  • (5% effort) Provide additional ad-hoc project management, program support, and coordination as required and other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Bachelor's degree. Additional training in Project Management coursework or certification in Project Management is desired.


Four years of progressively responsible experience in project management, including complex projects involving multiple functional groups. Experience in medical education/publishing, clinical research, or medical product development is desired. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
