Occupational Summary
 
The Office of Information Technology and Department of Computer Science at Duke University jointly seek a full-time position to support the university's undergraduate education mission in the areas of information technology and computer science through enhancement of curricular and co-curricular activities.  This position will serve as a member of the Innovation Co-Lab team, focused primarily on developing and organizing workshops, short courses, and self-paced learning materials, on various topics, through the Roots program or other co-curricular learning programs.    
 
This position requires a passion for technology, teaching, innovation, and working with students with a variety of experiences and backgrounds.  Breath of knowledge in computer science and latest information technology is required; depth of knowledge and experience in specific, relevant areas are desirable.  The position will report to the Manager of Academic Technologies.
 
Work Performed
  • Liaise with the Computer Science department and faculty to establish good communication and ensure mutually beneficial needs and goals are being met.
  • Develop and deliver training sessions on a variety of technology topics.  Some example topics include (but certainly are not limited to) basic web development technologies (html/css, javascript, git, etc), Java for Python programmers, C++, Shell programming, Spark, SQL vs. NoSQL, working with virtual machines, debugging programs, deploying software in the real world, etc. 
  • Additional topics for these classes will be generated with the Co-Lab team and in partnership with faculty and staff across campus who will help identify needs and gaps in technology education.
  • Provide students with background for computer science courses and preparation for careers in information technology.
  • Offer drop-in help and consulting hours for students seeking assistance with setting up development environments for the courses or choosing technology stacks for their projects.
  • Work with the Co-Lab Program Manager to organize, build, and standardize curriculum where necessary.  Ensure courses are well-documented and connect with existing courses to create opportunities for more threaded learning experiences.
  • Propose and carry out projects that serve as demonstrations of technology that can be used to teach or inspire.
  • Assist as needed with co-curricular needs and programming related to and outside of the Innovation Co-Lab.
  • Assist as needed on Co-Lab development projects, including working with other FTEs, student employees, and partners.
 
Qualifications
 
Required
  • 1-3 years experience working in computer science or web development field
  • Teaching, training, and/or public speaking experience, to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proficiency with modern front-end web technologies, including HTML, CSS, Javascript.
  • Proficiency with programming languages, including Java, C/C++, Python, etc.
  • Proficiency in code tracing, debugging, and problem solving.
  • Mastery of best practices for version control through Git.
  • Basic understanding of system administration, comfort with command line tools
  • Ability to continuously learn and assimilate new technologies
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of projects
  • Self-motivated, can identify gaps in co-curricular offerings and propose/implement solutions
  • Ability to work across teams and departments and balance conflicting and complementary needs
  • Excellent verban and written communication skills, including technical documentation and course support materials
  • Good communication habits – on top of emails, etc.
 
Preferred
  • Proficiency with back-end web development technologies, including Ruby on Rails, node.js, Django, etc.
  • Experience building and maintaining large applications with active users
  • Experience with Continuous Deployment / Continuous Integration and server management
  • Experience using and implementing OAuth
  • Experience with mobile technologies, including iOS (Swift) and Android development
  • Expeirence with hardware prototyping, basic circuitry, microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi), Internet of Things
 
 
Education / Training
  • Bachelor’s degree and experience in training, information technology and computer science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
