Overall Job Objective

Essential Duties

The New Hanover County Department of Social Services is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and customer friendly professional to aid citizens in need of economic assistance in the role of a Human Services Caseworker.  Caseworkers are responsible for interviewing clients and collateral contacts using various complex automated systems, explaining the requirements and benefits of all Medicaid programs, Food and Nutrition Services, Child Care subsidy, Work First Family Assistance and the Federal Marketplace to determine eligibility and/or re-eligibility for the various programs.

Zone 1 caseworkers specialize in Food and Nutrition Services and Child care subsidy.  Duties include researching and evaluating resources; verifying information; processing applications; explaining and recommending programs; referring clients to other appropriate agencies or community programs and documenting findings and the status of the case.  

Zone 2 caseworkers may be assigned to work in any of the following: Medicaid programs, Work First services, intake duties in multiple program areas, or assist in a unit where knowledge of multiple programs is required.  Duties include researching and evaluating resources; verifying information; processing applications; explaining and recommending programs; referring clients to other appropriate agencies or community programs and documenting findings and the status of the case.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and three years of related experience providing customer service in a setting with a high level of public contact; interviewing clients or families and using a computer for researching, searching and entering data.  Must possess excellent computer skills sufficient to use NC FAST, NC's online case management system, as well as various other search engines and software programs. Must be able to utilize complex automated systems and have knowledge of policies and procedures related to eligibility, determination and re-determination.

Priority consideration will be given to those candidates who have completed the Social Services Case Worker Workforce Readiness program through Cape Fear Community College.

Previous experience as an Income Maintenance, Economic Services, or Universal Caseworker is strongly preferred.  Experience in economic service assistance programs including Food and Nutrition and Medicaid is preferred.  

Other Information

Hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
Must be available to work during emergency situations.

Salary Information:
The hiring range for a Zone 1 position is $34,991–$47,238. plus a competitive benefits package. 

The hiring range for a Zone 2 position is $36,111–$47,798. plus a competitive benefits package. 

Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations. 

Application Pool Information:

Applications will be placed in an active file for a period of 90 days and will be considered as positions become available during that time. A new application must be submitted every 90 days to remain in the active file and available for consideration. 

Positions are expected to last according to needs of the department and as long as funding is available.
